Verti Drain Deep Tine Aerators

(This picture is a model 7516 working at Juan de Fuca Rec. Centre in Victoria B.C.)

Verti Drain is a manufacturer of several models of TURF AERATORS.

Verti Drain holds the original patent on the design of a machine that has become known as a
DEEP TINE” AERATOR.

“Deep Tine” simply means that the machine is capable of mechanically pushing a “tine” through a turf surface and into the sub soil area below. Current models can penetrate a depth of up to 16".

In the design of a Verti Drain, when the tine is at it’s lowest point in the ground, it is forced or “kicked” backwards providing a shattering effect to the sub soil layer. The depth and the amount of the “kick” action is fully adjustable on all current Verti Drain Aerators.

The primary purpose of a Verti Drain is to relieve compaction within a turf area and provide better drainage, allow deep root structure for the plant, allow oxygen down to the root zone of the plant and as a result provide a better playing surface.

Although aeration has been a part of turf maintenance practices for many years, often the depth has not been sufficient enough to relieve compaction that is often present below the 4-6 inch depth. With the depth that a Verti Drain can reach this compaction is reduced or eliminated and as a result there is significantly improved drainage, improved root depth and as a result healthier, stronger Turf Grass.

Many School Districts, Municipalities and Golf Courses have taken a Sports Field, Golf Green or Fairway that has had poor drainage and an extremely hard surface and turned them in to healthy, playable, first class surface. Many municipalities have been able to keep fields open during the wetter winter months and have reported reduced wear on these fields. (Just ask the City of Richmond, they are below sea level !! How's that for a drainage problem?)

The first Verti Drains were introduced in B.C. in the early 1980's and several were sold to Municipalities and Golf Courses.

The second generation Verti Drains were introduced in 1997.  This improved design allows for an increased amount of Adjustment and an increased in Speed of operation. With the addition of the standard 3 speed gearbox, the need for a tractor equipped with a “creep-gear” is eliminated.

These new units are offered in sizes from 1.2m to 2.6m operating widths and in 2 model class series. The 73 series units are offered for Golf Course Greens and tees and selected areas of fairways. These units have a maximum depth of 12”.

The 75 series is offered in 3 sizes 1.6m, 2.1m and 2.6m operating widths and are recommended for Sports Fields, Parks and Golf Fairways. These units have a maximum depth of 16” and use all sizes of tines up to a 1” solid and 1 ¼ “ hollow.

These new style Verti Drain’s have a built in adjustment for the “kick” or “heave” action. In a simple, fast adjustment the kick can be changed from 0 – 15 degrees.

The depth adjustment has also been improved. Adjustments of hole spacing is done through tine selection, forward speed of the tractor and a 3 speed gearbox on the aerator.

Tractor selection is important when choosing the correct Verti Drain for your application. The primary criteria is to have a 3 point hitch lift capacity to be able to lift and safely transport the aerator. (We have produced a separate sheet regarding tractor selection)

Today, there are approximately 40 Verti Drains in use in British Columbia.

It has been widely accepted that varying the depth, kick and hole spacing can help achieve optimum results on all areas.  This is now easily done with the Verti Drain.

It has become widely popular to use the Verti Drain all year around and not just in the Spring and Fall. To maximize the potential of this program Verti Drain has developed a multitude of tine sizes in both hollow and solid from ¼” to 1 ¼”.
